The Architectural CADD Consultants website consists
of over 200 pages of information online, difficult to keep all of it entirely
up to date all the time. Many of the ratings and review sections say that
to obtain the most recent reviews you need to get the book "Architectural
CADD : A Resource Guide" and thus, a prime purpose of the existence
of the site is to promote the book - were we to give it all away free online
we could not afford to continue doing all this writing and reviewing.
We remain totally independent of all these companies. They all regard us
as a hopefully friendly loose-cannon, and virtually all of them send us
complimentary versions of their software to make sure we are (in the book
at least) reviewing their latest versions. We have won fellowships from
a number of these companies (which essentially meant that whatever school
we were teaching at got free copies and we would get a couple weeks of training
sometimes at their headquarters). They realize that this does not guarantee
them good reviews - as you can see by the reviews of ArchiBus and ArchitrionII.
For years, many companies said that their Dealers get software and training
but they had no category for loose-cannons such as ourselves, and so we
bought retail (sometimes eligible for faculty discounts) just like everyone
else. We still budget $15,000 per year on CAD software we have to purchase,
and frequently exceed that.

I've learned a lot from his works, such as books and videos, and had fun putting together a presentation covering the Architectural CADD Shootout.
This fellow knows what he's talking about, and is very familiar with many CADD programs, other software, platforms, and hardware. Amazing.

I am an interior design student who has been reading these postings for months now and have finally been moved to comment on this posting from Geoff Langdon.
In fact, it was Geoff who put me in touch with Archi-talk when we were trying to solve a problem with textures. I wanted to scan in a photo and bring it into ArchiCAD as a picture hanging on the wall and was running into the same problems many of you did who tried to do something similar. I actually did get my solution here by reading old postings...the solution was the 'reload library' step that many miss in this situation. So, thanks to all.
But my point here is an endorsement of Geoff and his abilities and to recommend him as a wonderful resource. I have been a student of Geoff's for 3 years now and while it may sound like he gets paid by Graphisoft since he is so favorable towards their product, he has introduced his students to more packages than I can mention, including various releases of the dreaded AutoCAD, each time giving us the pros and cons. Geoff starts his students out on ArchiCAD and before the end of the first class we are all designing in 3D.
Any other package after that pales in comparison.
The book he mentions is an excellent resource as is his website and the CADD Shootout. I remember months back there was some mention of the Shootout here. Now you know how to get more information and to whom to address any questionsor concerns.
As I read this again, I realize it sounds like I am being paid by Geoff since I am so favorable. Let me just say that the semester is over, the grades arein and my CADD classes are finished. :-)
Geoff, nice to "see" you and I hope you're enjoying the summer.
