Designers 3D CAD Challenge with Architectural CADD Systems

In 1996 Professor Geoffrey Moore Langdon of Architectural CADD Consultants saw a need to highlight the dramatic changes that were going on in the world of CADD software used by architects - the nacent era of what we now call "BIM" or "building information modeling" also know as virtual building, and to provide a forum where architects using each of the various CADD options would do a design project side by side in front of an audience. The idea was to provide an exciting event informational for the architects in the audience, and valuable to the software developers to see what architects really need.

The Designers 3D CAD Shootout was held originally as a competition, most recent winner, and current holder of the "Architectural CADD Cup" is a team that used DataCAD. In recent years it has been held as a "challenge" where designers use their architectural CADD software in a design charrette for a public cause.
Check out the drawings the teams using ArchiCAD, DataCAD, AutoCAD, VectorWorks, Arris, and more, did in just 3 hours.

CADD and the Small Firm

12 to 2:00 pm at the Boston Society of Architects - 52 Broad St. Boston , MA

Special Presentation for the BSA Small Firms Practice Committee

Professor Geoffrey Moore Langdon, AIA Architect, co-author of CADD and the Small Firmwill give a special presentation on "CADD and the Small Firm" at the BSA Building 52 Broad St. Boston, from 12 to 2:00 on Thursday, September 20.

This presentation is focused on the concerns of small architectural design firms RIGHT NOW on a number of issues concerning their use of CADD and design software. Productivity issues, File Translation between softwares, getting people (particularlly designers and principals) "up-to speed", whether to "upgrade" to new "architecturally intelligent" versions, dealing with CADD managers / plotting services / online learning / CADD salespeople / and networks.

We will discuss the 5 different categories of CADD software, and why it is important for a small firm, in particular, to have at least one CADD program in every category - 2D drafting software, 3D modeling software, digital imaging software, architectural design software, and analysis/presentation/web software.

Design firms struggling with AutoCAD vs. AutoCAD ArchitecturalDesktop, DataCAD vs. DataCAD Plus, VectorWorks vs. VW Architect, and the options of "renting/subscribing" or transitioning to other software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or ArchiCAD, will find this session particularly useful and enlightening.

To clarify issues we will be showing segments of all of the above programs, as well as schematic design software made for principals such as SketchUp, and DesignWorkshop.

This is one opportunity to ask truly frank questions in an environment of architectural colleagues and no CADD salespeople. We also provide you with demonstration versions of all the discussed software to try out yourself and show your colleagues. There is even a free lunch for BSA members (non-members $10) if you call 617-951-1433x221 by 9:30. How do you transfer large files such as AutoCAD drawings without clogging your e-mail account ? How do you prevent others from altering your electronic files? Can you print out a plot file as you do a CAD file? What kinds of AIA Documents or other contracts apply to file transfers? How do you use project extranet services for this purpose ? Is Adobe Acrobat the safe way to publish electronic drawings? How should PKzip be used for this purpose? What are the legal and contractual issues surrounding the transfer of electronic files? In this workshop, we cover the technical how-to issues, the security issues, the designer/contractor/subcontractor relationships, and the legal ramifications.

Geoffrey Langdon (Architectural CADD Consultants) will present Mok3.  Mok3 provides solutions to rapidly and easily create and edit photorealistic 3D scenes from 2D images and pictures. Mok3 software implements a new paradigm to rapidly create photorealistic 3D models in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional CAD and animation tools. Mok3 offers consulting services to help clients take advantage of the power of photorealistic 3D.    Come see what Boston will look like in the year 2016 with a dynamic photorealistic walk around !
The company is looking for architects to do the final beta testing of this software (come to our meeting to sign up) which is expected to be officially released at the AIA conference in May 2005.

* Professor Langdon will present tips and tricks for translating files from AutoCAD 2005 and ArchitecturalDesktop into DataCAD 11

He will cover, how to deal with AutoCAD Xrefs, multiple paperspace layouts, drawings done in "metric" SI units, and ways of dealing with problematic entities such as inserted jpeg images, splines, elipses, mtext, embedded fonts, re-scaled dimension styles, 3D extruded ACIS solids, and, of course, proprietary ARX entities such as ADT walls, doors, cameras, and other architectural elements. He will show you which of these issues can be resolved with the the free or cheap versions of IntelliCAD, and which can only be solved with particular flavors of AutoCAD. Learn why asking a firm to simply "bind their xrefs" or explode entities will NOT work, and can create serious problems for Your firm.

Monday
July 25,  2005
5-6 pm
for the BSA- Building Envelope Committee

Prof Langdon will present how he does daylight and sunlight studies by using 3D CADD models in ArchiCAD and in DataCAD.  He uses the animated movies these studies produce for both interiors as well as exteriors to help calculate energy heat gain and to help design optimal daylighting schemes.  He also uses these dynamic movies in cases where there are property rights or "sun rights" issues between nearby property owners.  He will also show us how can inexpensively do these 3D models ourselves, regardless of what primary design software we are using.  Prof Langdon has 11 years of graduate work and 20 years of office work in solar and energy conscious design.  He is best known at the BSA, however, for his work in online communications (for which he was nominated to FAIA) and in architectural CADD.

ArchiCAD is a key piece of this strategy, but he will show GreenBuildingStudio which does DOE2 energy analysis, LightScape, and other approaches, and how offices can do this regardless of their primary 2D CADD drafting software.

C23 CADD and design software: side-by-side evaluations

Sponsored by: the BSA Committee on Design Software

Geoffrey LangdonAIA, Architectural CADD Consultants, PeabodyMA

Which mix of programs should your particular firm be using? We present Revit, ArchiCAD, VectorWorks, AutoCAD, ArchitecturalDesktop and others, side by side, with evaluations of the kinds of projects and types of construction for which each is appropriate. We pull no punches as we show you what the CADD salsepeople cannot. Our workshop leader is an expert who, every day, goes from firm to firm troubleshooting and teaching each of these CADD programs. He shares insights on what does and does not work in different types of design firms. We also explore some of the newest innovations in design software - 3D PDF from Bentley MicroStation, quickly and easily photographically realistic virtual environments with the Mok3 software, and the now available Digital Project software that allows Frank Gehry to do his magic. We include extensive Q&A time. We offer guidance on hardware and software options appropriate for your specific type of design practice.

Two Day Basic ArchiCAD Course Description
The course starts with a 3 hour overview of the many capabilities of ArchiCAD, then each seminar attendee will create their own building project along with the instructor. We introduce a conceptual technique, show you how it works, and several examples of how it is used in creating various types of drawings or models. Then each attendee makes use of that technique in their own project, and, finally, together we go over a review to cover why and how various approaches work, then go on to the next conceptual technique.
