A. Catalog Description :

An intensive study in the use of Computer-Aided Design and Drafting for Interior Design.

This course further familiarizes the student with interior design uses of architectural CADD software, digital imaging, productivity techniques, 3D modeling, and CADD rendering techniques. Two hours per week of lab time are required outside of class.

B. Course Objectives :

This course will enhance the students understanding of design in 3D space and principals of perspective to augment their work in other design courses. Students will become familiar with CADD systems, and the other computer based tools used by architects and interior designers (Architectural CADD), and the skills and concepts for their use. Beyond computerized drafting, this course seeks to acquaint the design student with 3D CADD modeling for design.

After learning the basics of 2D and 3D CADD with VectorWorks on the Macintosh in CADD I (as well as starting their Web site with PhotoShop and Netscape), this course seeks to round out the students skills by familiarizing them with other CADD software such as AutoCAD, IntelliCAD, DataCAD, ArchiCAD, and DesignWorkshop, in addition to learning how to apply CADD in interior design.

C. Student Evaluation and Grading Methods :

The students are asked to do several projects that are progressively more complex, each introducing more sophisticated concepts, on the CADD systems. They are not graded on design, but on how they have learned and implemented the various CADD drawing and 3D modeling techniques.

The grading of each project shall be weighted according to the complexity of the project -- the Lab projects are about 75% of the course grade. There are several quizzes and an exam on the lectures and reading that total another 15% of the course grade. There is also a Term Paper ( and written proposal for that paper) which counts for another 5 % of the class.

D. Course Requirements :

1) There will be 8 Lab assignments, each lasting 1 week (some last 2 weeks) which are intended to be completed during the four hour CADD Lab. They are due at the end of the Lab on the date specified and are graded. Lab assignments not turned in by the end of the next Lab will be downgraded as late.

2) There will be 9 Quizzes, and a Final Exam, on the reading (handouts and texts) and on the class lectures.

3) A Term Paper, on CADD and Interior Design - more detail given during class

4) A Final Project - Each student will show their expertice by applying their CADD skills on an interior design project, include plans, sections, elevations, details, perspectives, and animation walk through. See Final Project Description click here

5) A Web Site - All the students work for the semester shall be compiled into a web site of the students design.

Class Attendance is absolutely necessary, especially at the lectures, since the field is too new to rely on textbooks.

E. Required "Texts" :

1. Architectural CADD : A Resource Guide, by Langdon, 2002, pub. by the Architectural CADD Press, Boston. Book now avail. on CD regularly $69 - we have avail. for students at $20

2. ArchiCAD Student Version - we have arranged for each student to have their own ArchiCAD design software, along with tutorial guidebook from ICS for $99

F. Required Materials for the Student to Obtain :

1. 3 Boxes of High Density disks (DS/HD) 3.5" disks (at least 30 disks, minimum)

2. 4 --- Zip disk cartridges (at least 4 disks, minimum)

Software Used in the Course :

AutoCAD, IntelliCAD, DesignWorkshop, ArchiCAD, PhotoShop

Other Software is covered and demonstrated, but but the student does not need to submit projects with them

Recommended Software :

If the student already has a Macintosh or PowerMac system, (with math coprocessor) the following is strongly recommended :

1. ArchiCAD Student Version, a version of the Professional ArchiCAD software is designed specifically for students. It is a fully functional architectural CADD package, including 2D productivity macros and 3D modeling ability, it permanently marks all drawings as done with the student version. Available directly from Graphisoft for $ 75. (With tutorial book it is $95).

A significant discount from the usual professional price of $ 4,000.

2. VectorWorks a full Professional design software. It is a fully functional architectural CADD package, including 2D productivity macros and 3D modeling ability. Available directly from Nemetschek Inc. and through the mail for approx. $ 450.

If the student already has a Pentium or 486 DOS or Windows95/98/NT/ME based system, the following is strongly recommended :

3. DataCAD, Windows95 (and DOS, NT), the Professional DataCAD software.

It is a fully functional architectural CADD package, including 2D productivity macros and 3D modeling ability. Available directly from TechEd Products for $ 145. A significant discount from the usual professional price of $ 795.

4. IntelliCAD 2000, a version of the software used for the lions share of the course isavailable completely free. The student can download the software from the web siteat http://www.cadopia.com, where they "register" as users.

5. AutoCAD 2002 / ArchitecturalDesktop, normally $5,300, the students can subscribe to a special student 2 year limited version for $390, available from http://www.journeyed.com

Other Student specials for CADD software :

Through the course of the semester we will let the students know of a number of other special student prices for software such as AutoCAD, ArchiTECH.PC, SoftCAD 3D, MiniCAD, ARRIS, and several others.
