Note from Architectural CADD : DataCAD is a 2D production CADD program oriented towards architects and builders, as well a great easy 3D CADD modeler.  It has external reference files and file exchange with AutoCAD 14 to AutoCAD 2004 making it ideal for small architectural firms. DataCAD has the best support network of any architectural CADD software.

New in DataCAD 11 :
New file format  ".aec" instead of the  ".dc5" used in the last five versions over 9 years
Much better translator  to and from  AutoCAD
External Reference files
Very good rendering and visualization ability using project viewer  (uses o2c  technology)
New symbol browser
Drop mesh   easy 3D landform generator
Many improvements to 2D production drawing

DataCAD Team wins the 2001 Designers 3D CAD Challenge with Architectural CADD Systems !
The winning entry was presented Saturday March 2, 2002 at the Boston Society of Architects, where they not only explaind their design concept for the former World Trade Center site, and showed what they propose, but also describde how they did it.

Comments from Architectural CADD :  DataCAD is a favorite among architects, and the architect user groups, both local and online, are the most active of any architectural CADD option.  For 2D production work, no CADD can beat DataCAD.   DataCAD also has a very nice and powerful 3D modeler, combined with an outstanding 3D rendering ability.  The 2D and 3D, though, are not integrally linked as with some high end software such as ArchiCAD, Revit, or even Spirit.  A designer draws a plan, and then must also draw each elevation, line by line, though DataCAD has many many tricks and macros to make that drafting process easier.   There are several techniques, frequently shown at DataCAD user group meetings and in some online tutorials, whereby a firm can develop both a 2D production set and a 3D CADD model together, which makes it easier to develop the project.  The way DataCAD works is very very similar to AutoCAD.  How you use commands like move, copy, mirror, stretch, erase, and how you use layers and symbols (blocks) makes DataCAD feel like just an easier-to-learn, easier-to-use, but architecturally oriented AutoCAD.  The greatest thing in DataCAD are the thousands of "macros" in the toolbox that will draw (or model in some cases) thousands of things with a single click, such as stairs, elevators, whole column grids, and so on.

For DataCAD 12, due in 2007, the software developers are working on "smart walls" along with  parametric doors, windows, and other architectural objects.  They are also working on transfering External Reference files as AutoCAD xrefs.
