Hardware, well, times are such that nowadays you need at least 4 gig HD and rock bottom 32 meg ram with a CD and Windows95/98 preferably NT ANYWAY. Sometimes the easiest way to get there, rather than upgrading pieces and components is to get a whole new system. With fast systems WITH everything including monitor in the $1300 range hopefully this is not a big issue. Most design offices budget getting new systems for every employee at least every two years. When you calculate the productivity issues "saving money" by not having contemporary systems for everyone is false economy.
For the Macintosh people the new G4 systems truely are the equal (or possibly slightly better) than any Windows/Pentium system, and any of them will run any CADD just fine. Call if you are planning on using CADD on older Macs (for certain applications it may be ok). The new iMac systems at $1300 or so complete are stunningly good for CADD, and a surprising number of large architectural firms are now using them as CADD network file servers.
