The Designers 3D CAD Shootout 2001

The Design Project

Criteria for Design Project :

This year we hope to evolve this competition to reflect a real architectural design challenge as architectural CADD comes of age and becomes integral to our profession. Thus, instead of delving only into the schematic design achievable in 3 hours, we wish to see whole finished design projects. Starting on May31, 2001, you will be able to see the actual building design criteria.

The Design Project for 2001

is a Theme Restaurant

with lots of interesting twists

We want the Teams to use their standard symbol libraries (and hope these will get expanded over time) and automatic macros as much as possible.

Projects in past challenges of the Architectural CADD Cup :

* Town Meeting Hall / Visitors Center (18,000sf) - 1996

* Church / Arts Center (15,000sf) - 1997

Required Elements in past challenges : (purpose - to show limits of intricate 3D modeling ability)

* A bollard Lantern - cube, Triangle, Sphere - 1996

* A clock tower - 1996

* An intricate laticework entrance - 1996

* a curved stone bridge with steps and curved railing - 1999

* an ADA compliant ramp (vignette) - 1999

* an L shaped stair with height change (vignette) - 1999

* a roof with windowed dormer with pitch change (vignette) - 1999

The building will be at least two stories requiring ADA stairs, ramps, elevators, and possibly escallators, will be multi-use, and will have a sloped roof. In event the entire building is more than two stories, the Teams would still have only to detail plans of Two of the floors.

Also see the list of drawings and images each Team is required to generate for this project.

Probable aspects to the project :

* Multiuse

* ADA and Code Issues - elevators, 2 stairs, ramps, big bathrooms and halls, etc.

* 2 or 3 stories

* sloped roof

* site in USA or, if not, can be done with USA type knowledge of construction

* similar to projects used in the ARE architectural licencing exam from 1980 - 1998

Architects, What would you like to see in this challenge ? Are there typical projects, building types, construction materials, or special elements you do every day that you would like us to ask the challengers to do ? Let us know. Even if it is late for our 2000 challenge, you can help influence what they design in 2001. Click here with your requests and suggestions.
