The Designers 3D CAD Challenge 2002

The Rules / Required Drawings / Images and Criteria

The Rules for the 7th Challenge of the Architectural CADD Cup

Preliminary Images Due October 31, 2002

Live Presentations in World Trade Center Boston Amphitheater --- November 12, 2002

The Teams

Architects and designers world wide are permitted to challenge.

There will be several Team categories :

Design Firm Teams, Sole Practitioner Teams, Student Teams, Faculty Teams, User group Teams, and Software Developer Teams

Teams of 1 may participate. Individuals outside Massachusetts are encouraged to submit work, as all work will be presented by the Design Challenge staff in any case. Teams do NOT have to do ALL of the 20 Challenges, they can submit examples for some or even just one of the Challenges. Keep in mind, however, that all of the Challenges will still be addressed with each software - and particular unrepresented areas may be pointed out as weaknesses in a given software. Several different Teams may submit examples for the same CADD software - points and awards will be given for the best solutions.

The Task

The Teams must show how they would accomplish the various Challenges listed on the 2002 Project page for the theme building type and site, and also show us how they did it with their software, by showing selected screencaptured movies. They do not have to design the entire building, but only that which is necessary to show us how they would accomplish that particular challenge. For instance, to show us only how they would design a roof, they will need to create a building footprint typical of the theme building type and then show us how they would frame and roof such a building.

Any design should be ADA compliant, with stairs, ramps, elevators, and possibly escallators as necessary

Required Drawings and Images :

Each Challenge will require different types of illustrations. However, in virtually all cases we would like to see :

A. Coordinated Plans, Sections, Elevations

As gif/jpg files ready for Web

B. Perspectives

As gif/jpg files ready for Web. They may be hidden line, greyscale, or color. They should represent typical fast study images for design.

C. Digital Screen Recordings

Screen captured recordings, to show us How you did various aspects of your design. See the section on Digital Screen Recordings, for more detail on this.

Examples should be either animation files (QuickTime, Windows avi, ScreenCam, etc.) or virtual reality files (3DMF, QuickTimeVR, o2c, vrml), or as individual slide files (web pages, Acrobat pdf files, gif, jpeg). Keep in mind that the work will be displayed in front of an audience, by our staff, so you may wish to include descriptions, and reproduced for distribution published on CD and Web.

Please print out the files at high resolution at your office after the competition and send them to us for publication.

We will collect the gif/jpeg, pdf, etc. images the day of the challenge, via zips or CD-R.
