On the Ocean Boardwalk - Atlantic City |
In keeping with theme of wizards, witches, dragons, dungeons, elves, fantasy. You are free to use any associated architectural styles and ornament (or mix eclectically) associated with the theme - from stone castle elements, to Tudor stucco, to east European towers, to thatched huts (within code), dungeon torches ((within code), Salem village, and old English streetscapes. |
The concept here is of a trendy theme restaurant, which will also have other attractions as well as stuff to sell all along the lines of that theme. Similar restaurant chains to research would be the "Rainforrest Cafe", the "HardRock Cafe", "Fire & Ice, and "Marche". Also check out Disney's Paradise Island and ChuckECheese. The theme here is one of wizards, witches, warlocks, dragons, dungeons, and magic -- a theme currently popular in many different movies, television shows, games, and books for young people and adults alike. It also gives us a wide variety of immediately recognizable architectural styles and architectural elements from which to develop an attractive and engaging theme restaurant. The primary restaurant itself is a courtyard of kiosk stations where people can wander around and watch different chefs perform their magic of various culinary delights - a chef flaming cherries jubilee over here, a sushi chef slicing in a ballet of knives over there, a french chef pouring crepe batter on the flames over there - with small cafe tables close enough to watch the action (and be encouraged to try yet something else new). There are also areas for both adults and children to have fun, as a respite away from the gambling casinos. Additionally, there are a variety of small shops and attractions all along the same theme. An interior central courtyard lobby space is meant to feel relaxing but exciting, much like the lobby of certain hotels with that "Tivoli gardens" variety of trees, sculptures, couches, restaurants, gazebos, water, entertainment, and coffee tables. For after hours, there is a cave-like night club for drinks and dancing. During the day you can zoom through a dramatic glass elevator to a bar on the top floors with views from a tower and outside decks. Try your hand at the latest fastest growing indoor activity of flying around in a room supported only by air - called "indoor skydiving", or do virtual flying in a virtual reality dome room. Then you can relax in the game room where you can rent and try out various board games before you buy them, and where a hostess will help you join group games from murder/mystery clue games to dungeon and dragon games. The kids will love climbing all over the various huts, tunnels, and caves of the "elves village" while a staff helps them organize games and group activity. Architecturally, the complex should be dramatic, attractive, and exciting, from both exterior - where the various towers and dormers may even become a signature logo - to interior, where people will flock to this building not just for the activities, entertainment and food but for the dramatic and interesting architectural space. All a real design challenge. Pull it all together into a building design that works, has appropriate traffic flows, is structurally viable, and complies with building and ADA accessibility code, and you will impress your peers, your potential clients and most importantly our design jury. Show us all how you actually were able to do the various design elements in your CADD software, by capturing just an hours worth of your process with screen captured movies, and you could potentially earn a great deal more for your efforts. |
Notes :
All square footages as well as area names are only suggestions of intent.
Food / Drinks Serving Areas :
Main Cafe Restaurant
- "Coffee Caldron" - 6000 sf
Trendy open space with areas of "wizard" chef kiosks doing their "magic" with many cafe tables intermingled. Check out similar chains such as Fire&Ice, and Marche at www.marcheusa.com. Chef kiosk areas could include a crepemaster, wokmaster, kabobmaster, wrapmaster, sushimaster, soupmaster, capachino, pizza, etc. It could have multi-levels and various areas so that people can choose to sit in areas with different atmospheres. Flaming cherries jubilee anyone ?
Dance Club
- "Dragons Dungeon" - 3000 sf
A typical discotheque, but with a theme, and designed to be cavelike, with rock and stone smoky mist torches and cauldrons. Perhaps any water (if used in the project) could end up splashing into a pool here. Shaky wood bridges to get here or dragon motifs are not required but certainly would be a plus.
Bar / Pub
- "Merlin's Tower" - 1000 sf
Possibly on a third or even fourth floor, possibly with ocean views or even outside deck. Access to be able to walk out (or even have tables) on top of a castlelike wall with views of ocean and activities.
Game Room Cafe
- "D & D Game Room" - 2000 sf
A lounge where people can play board games - Parcheesi, D&D (dungeons and dragons), clue/murder mystery, etc. while a waitress staff provides drinks as well as renting, organizing, and selling the various games.
Children's Area
- "Elves Village" - 2000 sf
Not quite "day care", but an area where children can play supervised with tunnels and caves and fantasy characters, with access to simple burger kids meal area.
Ice Cream Shop - 300 sf
Typical Ice Cream shop, possibly it could be themed as an 1880s style, with wrought iron furniture, stained and etched glass, "gas" light sconces, etc.
Living Room Lounge
- "The Courtyard" - 3000 sf
A relaxing central area, open to the shops, entrances to the attractions, the Lizard Lair, and main staircase and glass elevators. It should have comfortable couches with coffee tables similar to an upscale hotel lobby, with waitress service for drinks.
Entertainment and Attractions :
Flying Area
- "Broomstick Flying School"- 6000 sf
Also known as "indoor skydiving" or "vertical windtunnels" these chambers are one the fastest growing entertainment attractions, with over 200 such facilities listed on sites such as www.verticalwindtunnels.com. Essentially a 25' diameter 3 story high round padded room with high speed fan aimed up. People typically pay $35 to fly around in the room for a half hour with instructor helpers while their friends watch through windows. We envision that this design element would form at least one of the "signature towers" of the project.
Virtual Reality Dome
- "Magical Cave" - 800 sf
A domed room approx. 12-15' in diameter for virtual reality flyovers, with a stand just outside where a staff member takes tickets, organizes, and sets times.
Video Game Room(s)
"Wizards Spell"- 2000 sf
Typical video arcade
Reptile Display Cage
- "Lizard Lair" - 100 sf
This is a glass and wiremesh enclosure housing an assortment of dragons, iguanas, Newts (with eyes) and other reptiles as an attraction sculptural element. It should be centrally located, visible from the main staircases and glass elevators. Many tropical lizards like to climb, so this "cage" should be at least two stories tall, and should include treelike branches or even a full "druid tree".
English Streetscape Shops :
You have the choice of making these shops inwardly focused, like an interior streetscape, or placed on the exterior, but they should be integral with the project and reflect the theme. Obviously all these things could be sold in one big area as is done at the Rainforest Cafe, in this project, however, it is more in keeping with the theme to make these all separate specialized shops. Feel free to add or substitute our list of suggested shops.
Bookstore Shop - 300 sf
Clothing Store - 300 sf
T-Shirt Store - 300 sf
Magic Shop - 300 sf
Jellybean Shop - 300 sf
Video Store - 300 sf
NicNak Shop - 300 sf
Poster Shop - 300 sf
Support Areas :
Restrooms - 1000 sf
As a minimum, there should be mens/womens on each floor, plus a small one off the childrens area and the bar.
Mechanical Rooms - 1000 sf
HVAC equipment for heating/cooling a 30,000 sf complex year round in a seaside New Jersey climate, plus whatever supplemental power/equip. the vertical wind tunnel attraction needs.
Office - 200 sf
Small administration area for the complex, for two, possibly three people.
Supplemental Kitchen / Cleanup - 1000 sf
Since the primary restaurant has its cooking all done out in amongst its patrons, all that is needed is a simple prep area, a cleaning area, and a supplemental kitchen for latenight bar snacks or for use by caterers for special functions.
Maintenance - 400 sf
Lots of cleaning supplies, built in vacuums, janitors sinks to keep the complex sparkling.
Storage - 400 sf
Lots of storage - to keep those board games they are selling, balloons, t-shirts, etc.
Elevator - glass - 150 sf
The elevator should be placed at a point in the building where it not only serves as a conveyance, but has a great view of lots of activity, and may be an attractive element itself.
Stair - Dramatic Central - 500 sf
You are free to design something appropriate. Next to or winding around the glass elevator, with views of the central Courtyard, with varying landings that include seats, with articulated railings reflecting the theme would be a good idea.
Stair - Secondary Egress - 200 sf
There should be a secondary, fire-rated stair egress from all floors.
Required 3D Elements :
Custom Door
In keeping with the theme - you are free to do a door of any style or design - but it should be unique - and we will want to see how you do it (in your screen recordings). Whether this is a heavy wood gothic dungeon door in a stone wall or a lacy cloud etched glass door for an ethereal tower entrance or an aviators hatch entrance to the flying room, you are free to go all out and use your imagination to design a door with character.
Elves Cave Hut
Here we would like to see how close you can come to "a curve in a curve in a curve in a curve" with the 3D modeling in your CADD software. An arched opening in a curved wall would be a "curve in a curve". The challenge here is can you curve that wall in elevation, and, even further, fair the frame.
Signature Tower
The silhouette of this 30,000 sf restaurant complex is meant to be recognizable and attractive. It should consist of at least one significant tower, peaked or crennelated. Ultimately, either the whole building silhouette or this tower may be a logo for this business.
Glass Elevator
See the previous description. We particularly would like to see, in your CADD screencams, how you develop such a custom elevator.
Dramatic Staircase
See the previous description. We particularly would like to see, in your CADD screencams, how you develop such a customized stair and railings.
Drawbridge Entrance
While we imagine you will probably want to use this element as a main entrance to the complex from the boardwalk, you are free to implement this element anywhere in your design - such as on an interior "bridge" as an entrance to one of the building areas.
Optional Suggested 3D Elements :
Custom Light Fixtures
Torches, chandeliers, candle wall sconces, and so on could certainly add character to such a project. Feel free to include anything you come up with - particularly if you invent a "torch" that can comply with the building code.
Custom Chair / Table
In certain areas of the project - particularly the game room, something like chairs with claw arms or tables with feet would also add dramatic custom character. Again, feel free to add and show such elements. Seeing how you develop custom sculptural elements in your CADD software will be valuable.
Water Stream and Waterfall
Acoustically, the noise of splashing water is important in such projects - to cover the din of people and machinery, but also to set a mood. Mist and waterfalls can also be part of a central attractive element. Bridges over such water could, themselves, be a significant design element and character giver to the project.
Location :
On the Ocean Boardwalk - Atlantic City
Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA has a temperate climate, typically max of 30 degF winter, and 80 degF max summer - though its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean (year round 56 degF) keeps the immediate microclimate warmer in winter (snow is rare) and much cooler in summer. It is situated about 35 minutes drive from Philadelphia and 1.2 hrs from New York City. These factors combined to make this seaside city a summer attraction for over 150 years. A promenade "boardwalk" was built in the 1890's on the primary sand dune with shops, restaurants, and hotels on the side opposite the beach/ocean (thus, prohibitions from construction on the primary dune have been perpetually suspended.) Nearby, there are dozens of elaborate resort hotels, most of which also have casinos, and some of which are also on that boardwalk. Literally millions of people come to this area each year - frequently in a vacationing upbeat party mood looking for a fun theme restaurant / bar / nightclub / gameplace such as is your commission to design.
The concept here is that this restaurant, assuming it is successful, would become a chain, with subsequent versions in other high volume entertainment oriented cities such as Orlando, Vegas, LA, Cairns, etc. Thus the "site" should be relatively generic and flat. On this particular design problem though, Design Shootout designers are free to exploit the connection to the Boardwalk, the ocean views, and that the dune falls off by one story away from the Boardwalk.
