A Conference Center for an Alpine Resort

Location :

Aspen, Colorado

Program Criteria

This new building replaces a previous building destroyed by fire. It is connected by a bridge to the main lobby of an extensive mountain resort hotel. That bridge also serves as an entrance to the ski slopes in winter. The conference center does not have to be identical to the existing hotel but should be in keeping with a rustic alpine theme with exposed heavy wood trusses, steep gables with dormers, stone at bases, and wood railings. This new building is primarily a conference center with meeting rooms, but it will occasionally be used for other purposes, such as major ski events. Thus a significant emphasis should be on a large comfortable multi-story lounge area, that should be visually dramatic and include exposed wood trusses.

Program notes

1. The conference center building is a new addition which should fit in with the rest of the resort complex.

2. It will be physically connected via a bridge (shown in another sketch) already designed by another design firm. It provides a main entrance from the hotel on the main floor. There are also entrances to both buildings underneath, which provide covered entrances in winter.

3. The owners and building department wish you to use the footprint for the old foundation of the wing that burned down, as shown in the supplied site plans. Try not to vary more than 15% from this footprint.

4. The site, next to an alpine style resort hotel complex, is very dramatic, with steep slope. There is a pond in front.

(no docks are needed).

5. The site slopes steeply so that the mountainside of the lower level of the conference center is buried into the hill, and the valley side is open to a porch with a view of the valley.

6. The building should have decks and balconies to take advantage of the views in all directions, from both inside and outside, on all floors.

7. Conference Rooms

The conference meeting rooms (each with teleconferencing) should be organized in pairs, with movable walls in-between so that the spaces can be combined for certain occasions.

8. Auditorium

The multimedia auditorium theater should have a sloped floor and accommodate approx. 250 people.

9. Ornamental Stair

The main ornamental stair should be open to all three levels. At times the conference center will host major ski events, so the stair should have low 6" riser steps as a maximum.

10. Diorama in Museum

The plans for the Permanent Indigenous Cultural Space (Indian Museum with Diorama)

should indicate where a curved wall for a diorama would be in the indian museum. The diorama shows scenes of indian life in this area before the settlers.

11. Ramp

Ramp from parking lot up to the finished floor of the lower level, 4' elevation, incorporated into lower porch design.

12. Hourly Office Suite

10 temporary rental office spaces, with common resources - kitchen, xerox, secretary, and small conference room

13. Interior Perspectives

At least two of the 12 perspectives should be of the central lounge area. Other views are your choice, but should show the various required elements and the overall building design.
