COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
Catalog Description :
This course will provide an introduction to computers for design presentation and documentation, presenting the basic two-dimensional concepts and practice of AutoCAD software. The course provides hands-on instruction emphasizing AutoCAD entities including editing drawings, layering, templates, menus, blocks, dimensioning, text, printing and plotting. Students will translate a hand-drafted set of drawings into a computer-generated package.
An intensive study in the use of Computer-Aided Design and Drafting for Interior Design.
This course familiarizes the student with interior design uses of architectural CADD software, digital imaging, productivity techniques, 3D modeling, and CADD rendering techniques.
Two hours per week of lab time are required outside of class.
Course Objectives :
This course will enhance the students understanding of design in 3D space and principals of perspective to augment their work in other design courses. Students will become familiar with CADD systems, and the other computer based tools used by architects and interior designers (Architectural CADD), and the skills and concepts for their use. Beyond computerized drafting, this course seeks to acquaint the design student with 3D CADD modeling for design.
Student Evaluation and Grading Methods :
The students are asked to do several projects that are progressively more complex, each introducing more sophisticated concepts, on the CADD systems. They are not graded on design, but on how they have learned and implemented the various CADD drawing and 3D modeling techniques.
The grading of each project shall be weighted according to the complexity of the project -- the Lab projects are about 75% of the course grade. There are several quizzes and an exam on the lectures and reading that total another 15% of the course grade. There is also a Term Paper ( and written proposal for that paper) which counts for another 5 % of the class.
Course Requirements :
1) There will be 9 Lab assignments, each lasting 1 week (some last 2 weeks) which are intended to be completed during the four hour CADD Lab. They are due at the end of the Lab on the date specified and are graded. Lab assignments not turned in by the end of the next Lab will be downgraded as late.
2) There will be 2-3 Quizzes, and a Final Exam, on the reading (handouts and texts) and on the class lectures.
Class Attendance is absolutely necessary, especially at the lectures, since the field is too new to rely on textbooks.

1. Architectural CADD : A Resource Guide, by Langdon, 2001, pub. by the Architectural CADD Press, Boston. available on CD
2. ArchiCAD Student Version 6.5 and Tutorialbook, available from Graphisoft via ICS
Required Materials for the Student to Obtain :
1. 3 Boxes of High Density disks (DS/HD) 3.5" disks (at least 30 disks, minimum)
2. 3 Iomega Zip cartridges (at least 3 disks, minimum)
Software used in the Class :
AutoCAD 2002 (primarily), IntelliCAD 2001 (free clone of AutoCAD to use at home), Autodesk ArchitecturalDesktop 3.3 (intro), DesignWorkshop (intro), ArchiCAD (intro), SketchUp (intro)
Note :
The CAD software used in the course is provided on at least 15 networked CADD workstations owned by the College, free to the students to use, 7 days a week.
The instructors do not recommend that students buy their own CADD stations, unless they are graduating within the next year. The extremely fast development of CADD will make any purchase obsolete within 3 years
If the student already has a PowerMacintosh or a Pentium Windows based system, the following is strongly recommended :
1. ArchiCAD Student Version, a version of the Professional ArchiCAD software is designed specifically for students. It is a fully functional architectural CADD package, including 2D productivity macros and 3D modeling ability, it permanently marks all drawings as done with the student version. Available directly from Graphisoft for $ 75. A significant discount from the usual professional price of $ 4,990.
2. DataCAD, the Professional DataCAD software. It is a fully functional architectural CADD package, including 2D productivity macros and 3D modeling ability. Available directly from TechEd Products for $ 145. A significant discount from the usual professional price of $ 995.
3. AutoCAD and ArchitecturalDesktop Student Version, Fully functional version of both the engineering drafting software AutoCAD as well as the building design oriented ArchitecturalDesktop, together normally $5,300, avail as student subscription for $430.
