Virtual Tutor" Archicad training CD-ROM by Design Animation

While my dealer has done a great job of teaching us how to use Archicad, if you don't use it a lot - you forget how to use it. Several weeks ago, I was scanning the Web for Archicad and stumbled on a site that sells a fantastic training CD for use with Archicad.

The company is called Design Animation and the CD is fantastic. You can find their site at http://www.archicadtutorials.com/ or you can e-mail them at info@archicadtutorials.com. The CD's (there are two) cover every aspect of using Archicad and has helped me immensely. The format is a series of QuickTime movies (that's what I call them anyway) that show each major part of how you use the software.

Examples of some of this things it shows you how to do are:

- -set up your computer.

- - the ArchiCAD desktop.

- - set up a project and where to keep all your files.

- -make VR scenes, panoramas and quicktime movies.

- -how to make walls, edit walls, all the options for placing your walls, make composite walls.

- -how to make roofs, edit roofs. (gables, dutch hips, hips, automatic and manually placed roofs, skillion roofs, dome roofs, curved roofs.

- - edit slabs, create slabs, modify slabs

- -learn how to use ArchiCAD's intelligent cursor to, snap to, constrain to, and align to objects.

- -to use plotmaker and the concept behind it.

- -create Shadows & paste them into your floor plans

- -make patches.

- -make simple library parts.

- -make modules.

- -how all your pallets work. (3d, Quickviews and more)

- - zones show them in 2d and 3d

- -Import DWG files, resize them to the correct scale and place all lines on a single layer quickly

- -dimensioning the fast way.

The only slight drawback is that the sound is sort of muted at one point and the guy that narrates it is from Australia and has an accent that is semi hard for a "good ol' boy" from Tennessee to understand (though in all fairness, he would probably have a hard time understanding my Southern accent <G>). ArchiCAD GDL

David A Nicholson-Cole, author of the *GDL Cookbook 2* The world book on GDL, get yours for $39 (USd) ****Students**** can buy it for $19.50.<<< Mark please note! Teaches Structured Programing & GDL, with ArchiCAD Tips & Tricks. Fax: <+>44-115-945-5121 Email: davidnc@innotts.co.uk

'GDL-Cookbook' published by Marmalade Graphics, written by David NC, ISBN:0-9535216-0-5 (so it is orderable through bookshops), available from Marmalade and The Object Factory, and also available from ArchiCAD dealers willing to share knowledge with their customers. Unfortunately, there isnt one in Australia, so you have to buy it directly from Marmalade.

For ArchiCAD, Actually, there are 6 books in English(and I have no idea what's out there in other languages) that are out there for purchase (you just don't look for them in the bookstores) and most US dealers promote them to varying degrees. They are as follows:

+ "GDL Cookbook" by David Nicholson-Cole (order through Digital Vision's web site)---asside from being the definitive text on GDL and structured programming, it is peppered with great ArchiCAD tips and tricks. Anybody who wants to make ArchiCAD REALLY perform in their office must one day get into GDL...so Fear GDL No More and get started with this book (also used as the text for our GDL Workshops with David);

+ "Project Framework" by Bill Rattenbury, published by Graphisoft (order through your local dealer or Digital Vision)---how to deploy ArchiCAD throughout an office; $65 with CD; 'Project Framework', written by Bill Rattenbury, assisted by Murray Pearson and Campbell Yule. Amazingly, this has no ISBN number so is only available through Graphisoft dealers.

+ "Training Guide" by Graphisoft (order through your local dealer or Digital Vision)---designed to be used in a classroom setting for ArchiCAD 6.0 beginners; $30;

+ "Step-by-Step Tutorial" by Tom Simmons, published by Graphisoft (order through your local dealer or Digital Vision)---updated recently for 6.5, this is a great self-paced teach yourself ArchiCAD guide, including a multimedia version of the book with QuickTime movies; $30 with CD;

+ "Teamwork Productivity Guide" published by Graphisoft (special order through your local dealer or Digital Vision)---an unofficial publication, not on anyone's price list, but a good general text on deploying Teamwork in an office; price not fixed yet but in the $25-30 range;

+ "Photoshop for Architects" by Envision of Hawaii (order form http://www.objectsonline.com)---great introduction to computer graphics and Photoshop and specifically, how to work with scanned images and how to accomplish photomontaged rendered images that look real with people, cars and trees as entourage; $195;

+ AND COMING SOON "Mastering ArchiCAD" by the boys at Digital Vision in California (that's us; to be released later in the year with no ship date as of yet)---the text used in our systematic hands-on workshops, taught in southern California to assist users in learning how to optimize ArchiCAD for productivity and profitability IE, all the killer tips and techniques you need to know to make ArchiCAD REALLY kick butt!

http://www.digitalvis.com and click on Products and then on the "GDL Cookbook" or "Order Software" buttons for more information (including a PDF order form) on ordering the above text books.
