About the BSA
The Boston Society of Architects is the largest chapter of the AIA - American Institute of Architects, and is located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It is organized into over 80 special interest and organizational committees, each of which meet at least once per month.
There are seven different committees covering different aspects of Computer Aided Design in Architecture, one of which, the DataCAD DBUG group, has gone on to international prominence with its internet forum dbug@world.std.com.
As an outreach to the entire design community, most of the meetings and presentations are open to the public (sometimes there is a small admission charge) and membership in the society is not restricted to registered architects (as some other chapters are) but open to anyone interested in architecture and architectural design.
In the CADD arena, the Boston Society of Architects leapt to international prominence as sponsor of the Designers 3D CAD Shootout for Architectural CADD Systems, now co-sponsored with A/E/C SYSTEMS. In electronic forums, again the BSA lead the way, establishing the first architectural online forum (before the Web and the internet) in 1984. Their online system, with several thousand architect users by 1991 became the model for the changes to the national aiaonline web site. The BSA web site http://www.architects.org was totally redesigned September 1999 and, is again a model for other non-commercial architectural organizations.
