Past CADD Predictions

Expect AutoCAD 2003 in late fall of 2002

- we believe it will have, built in, the "object enablers" so that it will at least view drawings created in Autodesk ArchitecturalDesktop3, Mechanical Desktop, and Landscape Desktop

Expect Autodesk ArchitecturalDesktop2002 in Spring of 2002

- we believe it will introduce "stories" to deal with multi-floor buildings

Expect DataCAD 10 in Nov of 2001

- we believe it will include bitmap imaging (i.e. you can put photos and scans in background to trace)

Expect an Architectural version of FormZ in Summer 2002

- we believe it will have walls, and libraries of pre-made windows, doors, stairs, columns

Expected : DataCAD Plus 10 in Dec 2001

- we believe it will refine the automatic section ability

Expect 3D Studio2002, in Jan 2002 to have radiosity and LightScape to be discontinued

Expect ArchiCAD 7.5 in Dec 2002

- we believe it will fully support Mac OS X, Windows XP, support PaperSpace Layouts from AutoCAD, and new 3D video accelerator cards

Expect VectorWorks Architect 10 in Jan 2002

- besides incorporating the Landscape module, it will quickly switch floors/stories, have better roofs, and better sections

Expect Revit 4 around Oct. 2001

- we expect improvements to detailing with detail libraries

Expect ArchT to have a new life brought to us by EaglePoint Software, possibly in 2002

Expect that there will be no free sources of the AutoCAD clone IntelliCAD by Fall 2001 (download it now while you can)

We believe that an ArchiCAD Subscription key will be commonly available by Feb 2002 (replacing the old Pay-Per-Use)

We believe that America Online will spin off the web-writer of Netscape Communicator (PageComposer) so download it now while you can

We believe that, once object oriented intelligent architectural CADD reaches about 40% of architects (which is within 2 years), it will catch on like wildfire and that, within 15 months from that point, it will be the norm in 90% of all firms, and will be required by many building departments. The idea of drafting a building, line by line, as 97% of firms do July 2001, will be considered quaint and historic by 2004.

We believe that Microsoft will standardize on file format for 3D CADD objects relatively soon (by Summer 2002) and that it will be either o2c (DataCAD), GDL (ArchiCAD), or Drag-and-Drop (AutoCAD) or possibly something Microsoft invents - it will NOT be DWG, Java, VRML, IFC, 3DS, or any of the popularly hyped XMLs (aecXML, gbXML, designXML, acdbXML, etc.) - and, within 6 months of that announcement All CADD programs will HAVE TO import that format, which will be the standard for manufacturers products posted on the web

We believe Autodesk Studio (the new schematic architectural design sketching tool) will be available Dec. 2001 (Autodesk claims Sept. 2001)

Expect a version of DesignWorkshop with true output to the gbXML (to do energy analysis in DOE-2) will be ready around March 2002

Expect to see a return of AllPlan, as a new agressive USA vendor will tout the power of AllPlan and their new support network

Expect to see more of BOA, now that the Windows2000 version is ready

SketchUp - hmmm not sure

Architecture for MicroStation TriForma - hmmm not sure

Arris - hmmm not sure

Prediction Made Jan 2001 :

Note : DataCAD 9 actually shipped early in September, the Unnamed CADD from Cambridge now called BOA shipped April 2001

Prediction Made June 1998 :
