There has been a great deal of planning, negotiating, feedback from the spectators, and the Teams themselves over the past four months. We have looked into a number of new venues including the AIA Exposition, and AEC Systems. One particular desire was expressed by all - that the amphitheater forum with the mega-display system and the architecture-as-spectator-sport excitement is an important part of what this event needs to be. Another desire by many was the added exposure the event would have by being part of one of the major conferences for our industry. The Boston Society of Architects has helped us achieve both those objectives by making the Design Shootout a major part of the first day of Build Boston.
The event will run from 9 am to 3 pm in the same amphitheater as before in the World Trade Center. Following the event, the attendee architects will be able to visit the booths the competing software companies have on the Build Boston exposition floor.
Other changes from before include, the AIA Computer Aided Practice (CAP) as a new sponsor, a panel of judges drawn from the AIA CAP who determine more judiciously the winners in the various categories during presentation jury reviews, the challengers of record will now be each software developer themselves - now free to choose whoever they like for their 3 person Team - and a $1000 registration fee for the competitors.
Most of the rest stays the same. It is still a design competition, with a project kept in secrecy until the morning of the charrette, with an audience watching and running commentaries and presentations. There will also be the chance for the audience to vote on their choices, but in fewer categories. The Teams will also have to present their plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, and animations, in a special period at the end. At least one person on each Team must be a registered architect. Two designers actually compete with networked systems while a third person talks to the audience and helps coordinate the other two. More detailed rules will be distributed as the event nears.
Significant advantages for the competing software companies are that they will have full booths nearby immediatly following the event and for the next two days to capitalize on the exposure. The BSA and the AIA also benefit from sponsoring a premiere event for our profession.
At present we expect 12 competing Teams (and possibly as many as 15 which we can easily accomodate). This would include all of the 8 Teams that were there last time, (AutoCAD/AutoArchitect, DataCAD, Microstation/TriForma, MiniCAD, Arris, Architrion, ArchiCAD, AllPlan), as well as several others who have expressed strong desire to participate this time, (Pro/Reflex, Ketiv ArchT, ChiefArchitect, Speedikon), of course the competition is open to any others.
The Web site, where all the disceminating information is kept, will continue at http://members.aol.com/shootout3D/event.html but will now be echoed also at http://www.architecturalcadd.com/cup
